Joseph P. St. Louis

Joseph P. St. Louis is certified as a Specialist in both Criminal Defense (Arizona State Bar, 2000 to present) and in DUI Defense (National College for DUI Defense, a certification recognized by the American Bar Association, 2012 to present). Mr. St. Louis is AV ® PreeminentTM Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell® and has been listed in Woodward/White’s Best Lawyers in America in the DUI specialty area since 2013. He has been named to the Best Lawyers in Arizona and New Mexico by Super Lawyers magazine in the DUI specialty area since 2009 and was named one of the Best Lawyers in Tucson in the DUI specialty area by Tucson Lifestyle Magazine since 2013.

Mr. St. Louis is one of eleven members of the governing board of the National College for DUI Defense, the Board of Regents. The NCDD has over 1,600 members nationwide. Mr. St. Louis is also the past president of Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice, a statewide defense organization with over 400 members. In 2003, at the request of the then-presiding chief judge of the Pima County Justice Courts, Mr. St. Louis served as a part-time Justice of the Peace. In 2013, Mr. St. Louis was one of four lawyers who litigated a 17-day hearing in the Maricopa County Superior Court challenging the manner in which blood testing is performed in the Scottsdale City Crime Laboratory. The hearing resulted in the judge suppressing all blood evidence in 11 felony cases, after finding the results to be unreliable.

Mr. St. Louis is a sought-after lecturer and trainer at continuing legal education seminars. In both 2015 and 2019, Joe St. Louis was named as one of the top 10 highest rated lecturers at any presentation given in that calendar year by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (out of approximately 200 speakers each calendar year). Mr. St. Louis has spoken on a variety of legal topics at legal education seminars sponsored by a variety of State Bar and Defense Attorney organizations in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.

Mr. St. Louis is a graduate of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)’s Student Course on Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, NHTSA’s Instructor Course on Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, and the American Chemical Society’s Forensic Chromatography Course.

“I would give Joe 10 stars if it was possible. I found Joe to be extremely professional, honest, knowledgeable, hard-working, and responsive. His years of experience really shine in the courtroom and I could tell the judges respected him. I feel so lucky that someone recommended Joe to me and give my absolute highest recommendation of Joe to anybody that may need help.” - Former Client

Mr. St. Louis has defended several death penalty cases, both in state court, where he was lead counsel in Pima County’s first death penalty case tried completely to a jury (the client received a prison sentence after Mr. St. Louis convinced the jury not to impose the death penalty) and in federal court, where he was found to be qualified as “Learned Counsel,” a designation reserved for only the most qualified attorneys handling these cases. Mr. St. Louis has the unique distinction of having had two back-to-back first-degree murder cases in which the judges dismissed all murder charges during the trial.

Mr. St. Louis has tried over 200 cases to juries, on both misdemeanor and felony charges, in federal court and in state courts throughout Arizona. He has also argued cases before the Arizona Court of Appeals, the Arizona Supreme Court, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Mr. St. Louis has served as the attorney coach for the Basis Oro Valley Mock Trial team, from 2012-2020. His team won the Regional Competition 5 years in a row, and competed in the State championship rounds, placing 2nd and 4th in the state.

A National Leader In the Legal Field Losing Your Freedom is Not an Option

To be an effective criminal defense attorney, you need to be able to hold the attention of your audience, whether it is a judge or a jury. The best attorneys win Joseph P. St. Louis cases by conveying that they have a deep knowledge of the subject matter by effectively cross-examining witnesses, by making persuasive arguments, and by keeping the jury interested. Being asked to speak at a legal conference is certainly an honor; it means that a defense organization or State Bar thinks that you have something valuable to share with the attendees. However, being asked to speak at legal conferences repeatedly means that you are recognized as a highly skilled teacher who can hold the attention of the audience while helping those attending become better attorneys. It also means that you are constantly finding new ways to effectively handle issues in criminal cases, and that you have new information to share with attendees. Joe St. Louis has been asked to give over 150 lectures and trainings by State Bar Associations and defense organizations throughout the United States in the last 25 years.

The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) has over 9,000 members nationwide. They put on high quality legal education seminars on a variety of topics throughout the United States, with approximately 200 lawyers giving presentations each year. In both 2015 and 2019, Joe St. Louis was named as one of the top 10 highest rated lecturers at any presentation given in that calendar year. Joe’s 2019 lecture, The Mysteries of Retrograde Extrapolation: Understanding Them and Overcoming Them, given at the NACDL and the National College for DUI Defense’s 23rd Annual DWI Means Defend With Ingenuity Seminar “Solving the Mystery of DUI Acquittals” in Las Vegas, Nevada, before an audience of nearly 400 lawyers from across the country, was selected to be included in NACDL’s Forensic Science in Criminal Law webinar series.

Renowned Legal Speaker

In addition to the acclaim Joe has received as a speaker at legal conferences, he has risen to a position of leadership in virtually every organization in which he has volunteered to serve. In 2003, Joe was asked by the presiding Pima County Justice of the Peace to serve as a part-time Justice of the Peace. That same year, Joe was elected Chairman of the Arizona State Bar’s Membership Assistance Committee, which helps lawyers and judges with drug, alcohol and mental health issues. In 2006, Joe became the President of Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice, a state-wide defense organization with over 400 members. In 2013, Nesci & St. Louis was awarded the Arizona Public Defender Association’s Robert J. Hooker award for the firm’s “extraordinary assistance” to the indigent defense community.

In 2014, Joe was elected to the Board of Regents, the eleven member governing body of the National College for DUI Defense, a nationwide defense attorney organization with over 1,600 members.

Joe is certified as a specialist in criminal defense by the Arizona State Bar, and certified as a specialist in DUI defense by the National College of DUI Defense (a designation recognized by the American Bar Association). He is AV ® PreeminentTM Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell® and is listed in Woodward/White’s Best Lawyers in America in the DUI specialty area. He has been named to the Best Lawyers in Arizona and New Mexico by Super Lawyers magazine in the DUI specialty area since 2009, and was named one of the Best Lawyers in Tucson in the DUI specialty area by Tucson Lifestyle Magazine.
